National Kidney Foundation: Seeking Volunteers
The NKF has screening events in Miami and Orlando. There is a need for volunteers in the Orlando area who are bilingual. NFK is looking for volunteers for their free kidney screenings. They are looking for nurses with a clinical background as well as nurses with no clinical background to help them with these screenings. There is one screening scheduled for June 28th, and another one either the first or second week in December. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Rebecca Seeman at the National Kidney Foundation, Phone (212)889-2210 ext 511 or by E-mail rebeccas@kidney.o
Lack of Male Volunteerism
I work for a Community Based agency in Orange County, California, and I want to comment on an observation that I've made over the years. Many Volunteer Leaders are constantly seeking ways to recruit or acquire the interest Male Volunteers. My agency has a Mentor program for children and young adults diagnosed with a mental health illness, and I have yet to find a group of men willing to share their interests and hobbies with these youth. They are more willing to share their resources rather than their precious time. The lack of male voluteerism in a Mentor capacity really says a lot about how society cares for their youth.
Tutors Needed at Jahn Elementary in Chicago
Jahn World Language School is a dual language (English/Spanish) magnet elementary school (pre-K through eighth grade) in Chicago's Roscoe Village. Despite the quickly gentrifying area surrounding the school, Jahn's students are primarily low income children from around the city, with most receiving free or reduced breakfasts and lunches.
We currently need tutors for our first through eighth graders in all subjects, but especially math. Tutors can choose which grades and subjects they would like to tutor. Ideally, we would like someone to tutor Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, from 3pm to 5pm.
Bilingual Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteers Needed
Fairfax CASA is recruiting bilingual volunteers to work on behalf of abused and neglected children referred to us by the court. No experience necessary and all training is provided. Time commitment is 15-20 hours a month for at least one year. Volunteers attend court hearings, write court reports, visit the child twice monthly, and interact with other professionals such as social workers, teachers, guardian ad litem (child's attorney), etc. This is an advocacy position that will make a difference in a child's life. Please consider being a volunteer! For more information, please visit our website at www.casafairfax.org or contact Meloni Hinnant at 703-273-3526 or by email at mhinnant@casafairfax.org.
MENTORS & LIFE COACHES NEEDED!
What is mentoring?
Who in your life saw your potential? Who recognized your strengths? Who showed you another way to do things or think about a problem? Who encouraged you to explore your own options? Who challenged you because they believed in who you could become? For many of us, that was our family. For some it may have been the neighbor or a teacher. These people are our mentors.
Mentors are people who choose to be our friends, coaches, cheerleaders, confidants, advisors, and tutors. They choose to spend time with us, with no strings attached, because they care.
Who would I be mentoring?
Obtaining Grants
I am new to the world of Grant Writing! I have extended education, BA and MS, and experience writing, but not specific to grant proposals. I was thrusted into it because I proposed a Hispanic Community Integration Project, which aims at gathering statistical data for Hispanics in the county we serve, ascertain their needs, and build strategies to better assimilate and serve the Hispanic population. I have enough moral support, from the Director of our Social Service agency to the research institute we are collaborating with. However, the budgeted cost is $30,000 dollars. I could use some advice and resources that I could tap into to obtain this funding. ¡Necesito su ayuda!
