Research Assistant
Job Description
The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a well-established not-for-profit social science research and development organization. AIR’s Federal Statistics Program works with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which is the federal government’s primary source for collecting and analyzing statistical data about public education in the United States and around the world. NCES is responsible for the management and implementation of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Housed within AIR, NAEP-ESSI (NESSI) provides technical support to NCES staff managing, implementing and reporting on NAEP. These support tasks include research planning, publications review, quality assurance, assessment design and development, and policy analysis and reporting.
We are currently seeking a Research Assistant to support the Assessment Development Team on various assessment development activities.
• Develop and maintain a broad understanding of all aspects of NAEP
• Assist in the review of NAEP subject area items throughout the assessment development process
• Work with other staff members to respond to requests for information
• Help revise the current system for tracking NAEP assessment development activities
• Draft memoranda that are clear and concise, of varying length and with quick turnaround time
• Prepare, present and revise short text documents or PowerPoint Presentations on issues related to NAEP assessment development and quality assurance
• Assist in the review of documents prepared by NESSI staff and small business partners to ensure the documents meet NESSI Quality Assurance Standards
• Assist in other assessment development activities as assigned
Job Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree and previous work experience
• Teaching experience is preferred
• Superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Applications
• Ability to pay close attention to detail while keeping larger project goals in mind
• Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities under time constraints
• Ability to work independently or as a member of a team
