How legal are the new travel restrictions to Cuba?

We all know the excuses that goverment is using for these new regulations.

But I am really surprised no one has appeal these measures from the legal point of view of 1) privacy (I should be able to take with me what I want -as far as it is not dangerous to others) 2) freedom (I should be able to spend the amount of money I want in a travel if it is my well-earned money) 3) Citizen´s civil rights : the goverment shouldn't be able to restrict my number of trips to another country... at least not under a democratic system (we all know trips were not allowed by the USSR, but this is not the USSR, right?).

On the other hand, this kind of measures should be an "alert" to all the citizens, not just for the Cubans Americans. If tomorrow the US goverment does not approve the Mexican's goverment or the Israel's goverment they could come up with something similar and limited traveling to Mexico or to Israel... Not possible? Once a restriction is allow, you've got a legal precedent!

Any thoughts?

It's a shame!

I totally agree with the above comments. As a Cuban-American with family still in Cuba, I find these new measures infuriating. It's just plain sad that politics (and archaic at that) is still the impetus behind this ridiculous trade embargo. It hurts me and my family and many other Cubans. It hurts us all -- I wish more Hispanics and others would voice their disgust with this. Although it may not affect many people now, the potential and precedent of this Administration's bold and unkind action, allows them to not stop here. Contact your representatives and let them know if you disagree with these new travel restrictions to Cuba. Embargo Must End!

The american embargo against Cuba has caused more problems then it ever was intended to solve. It has never deterred Fidel Castro one inch away from his Marxist system , and it never will. The Cuban people are intelligent and quite resourceful but they cannot bear the burden of this embargo any longer. With the recent travel restrictions to Cuba our family members left behind will only suffer more. Why has Bush done this? My Belief is many of his polices are driven by his religous Born Agian Christian dogmatic beliefs, which at times seem to be deviod of any common sense, a disease thats seemed to run rampet among the holy rollers. The Bush administration never consulted the many Cubans in Miami, New Jersey and other states as to how they felt about this action. The reason is he does not care about the Cuban people, only thier votes. Cubans have to wake up, and see that they have been used, time and time agian through many administrations for votes only to promise time amd time agian that the end of the Castro Regime will soon be at hand. When will the Cubans realize that we must look to the welfare of the Cuban people, our family and friends in Cuba and attempt in every way to help thier plight. Castro will no longer be there some day, when is that some day? Many of us thought it would be 10 or maybe 20 years before it would end. It hasn't, and we do not know when it will, in the meanwhile lets try to help those that are there and stop this stupid embargo and travel restrictions.

How legal are the new travel restrictions to Cuba?

Excellent point!!!!
Do we really know who is getting hurt here? Is the Cuban population!!, not Fidel Castro.
He's still getting along with the "rest of the world". There are tons of tourists from other countries that visit Cuba. Even the US is doing business with the Cuban Government!!! C'mon, do you think Diaz-Balart (both brothers) and Ross-L, have any relatives left in Cuba?? Nope. Thats why they don't care!!
They just happened to have a personal issue with Castro, they hate him because, back in the days their families were wealthy, and Castro took everything away from them.
Anyways, these "representatives" happen to be the ones pushing these laws.
When was the last time they were in Cuba?? I wonder...How come they know so much about what the cuban population needs?
I live in Miami and the Cuban Exile does not agree with this new restriction. Most of them still have close relatives in Cuba and all they want is to either bring them here or at least take some money to them.
We should have "representatives" that look out for the benefit of the citizens they represent, not their personal issues. I hate for my tax dollars to go only on trips between DC and Miami and for huge salaries.

We all realize that with terr

We all realize that with terrorism on the world's plate, Cuba can become a stepping stone into the U.S. however a sub-developed country
with a forty year alienation remains a threat mostly to the older generation. I agree that Cubans, Americans in all forms, should be allowed to visit and help a nation of people whom because of a leader's difference in political preference, has threated and scared the world's most powerful and technologically advanced nation. Its' Goliath building the great wall of China instead of trying some diplomacy and not dictating to the little guy. Who's the dictator?
